The SBDC & LaGuardia’s Financial Literacy Program
Business owners along with many other New Yorkers often face financial challenges such as overextended debt, low savings, weak credit, and limited understanding of and access to the products and services of financial institutions. As a result, people cannot achieve goals such as home ownership, education, or entrepreneurship. The recent economic downturn has only underlined the critical role that financial literacy education plays in the economic strength of individuals, households, small businesses and by extension, communities.
In response, the SBDC works closely with the LaGuardia Community College Financial Literacy Program which supports the economic well-being and financial inclusion of New York City’s diverse communities by educating individuals about financial decision-making, money, banking, and the U.S. credit system. SBDC clients needing to strengthen credit reports or address other personal financial issues are referred to work with the Financial Literacy Program.
Through workshops and one-on-one counseling, the Financial Literacy Program helps all individuals as well as business owners with such issues as:
• Creating a household budget
• Setting and meeting financial goals
• Evaluating financial decisions
• Credit building and repair
• Preparing for homeownership
• Debt management
• Record-keeping
• Basic tax education
• Financial products and services
• Savings and investing
Services are available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.
